A bold color choice can get old fast in a room where you spend a lot of time. That’s probably why most designers suggest using neutrals as a base for living rooms. Neutral doesn’t have to mean boring, though. Just look at the image above! But starting with a neutral background gives you the flexibility to tweak your décor to suit the season or your mood without having to change everything.

Two colors rise to the top of the neutral pile for living rooms. Browns give a feeling of dependability and comfort. Grays feel balanced, calm and sophisticated. Both are good backgrounds for prints or colorful furniture, art, etc. that will keep your room interesting and relaxing.

DINING ROOM

Before choosing a color for your dining room, it might be best to consider who uses it most often. If it’s a family affair, and your family includes children, you may want to consider calming colors (blues, greens or grays) to help cut down on mealtime squabbles. If your dining room is reserved for guests, consider a friendly, cheerful color (orange or yellow) or one that feels warm and sophisticated (red or burgundy).

KITCHEN

There’s a reason white continues to be the top choice for kitchens. White is associated with cleanliness, purity and space—all important for the place where food is prepared. Pairing white with stainless steel appliances adds even more umph to a clean, modern vibe. Those two colors alone might feel a little cold, though. Consider adding another color to the mix, like red or coral (stimulating), green (the color of herbs and veggies), or warm neutrals (wood tones, taupes or soft grays).

BEDROOM

When you want to rest and relax, blues and greys are soothing while earth tones are grounding. For example, the walls in the room above are in Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year, Silhouette. They describe it as “a distinctive color that weaves luxurious burnt umber with delicate notes of charcoal…” (That’s a designer-speak description of an “earth tone.”) For a more luxurious option, consider purple, a color long associated with royalty, sophistication and elegance. Or think pink for a room that inspires love, nurturing and tenderness.

BATHROOM

See how the white tub pops against the green walls? Together, those colors convey nature, growth and healing (green) alongside cleanliness and purity (white). If you don’t want to go that green, add a houseplant for some actual nature on a smaller scale. To avoid green altogether, consider yellow. A color that inspires optimism and happiness seems like a fantastic way to start your day, don’t you think?

HOME OFFICE

There are many color options for a home office, depending on what you do and how you do it. Is your job stressful? Blue offers feelings of wisdom, peace and competence. Are you starting a new role? Orange inspires confidence and success. Creatives might prefer yellow, with its promise of optimism, creativity and clarity. Bottom line: choose a color that makes your workspace your happy place.

IF IT’S TOO DARK, LIGHTEN UP

That seems like a no-brainer, doesn’t it? While you might also benefit from better/brighter lighting, the easiest way to freshen up the look of a bathroom is a fresh coat of white or white-ish paint. The one pictured above is Hourglass by Glidden, an ultra-soft white color from their 2025 collection that pairs well with many colors. If a lighter wall paint sheds light on the subject but you miss deeper hues, consider painting the vanity a contrasting color.

IF YOU WANT DRAMA, GO DARK

Maybe light and bright isn’t what you’re after. In that case, go bold with a deep, rich color. Maybe something like Behr’s 2025 Color of the Year, Rumors, described as “a luxurious ruby red” that will add “warmth and rich allure.” Doesn’t that sound elegant? Do make sure you have sufficient lighting so you’re not fumbling for your toothbrush in the dark. 

FEELING PLAYFUL BUT WANT TO KEEP IT CLASSY? ADD PATTERN.

Like this bathroom striped in Sherwin Williams’ 2025 Color of the Year for HGTV Home, Quietude. “A soft sage with a whisper of blue influence, Quietude is an emerging color for enduring design and soothes any space inside or out.” If stripes aren’t your thing, you can always choose a different pattern. Buffalo plaid, anyone?

SELLING SOON? STICK WITH NEUTRALS

You want to appeal to the maximum number of buyers, so a color that plays well with many styles is a good choice. Sunbleached, from Sherwin Williams’ 2025 Color Capsule of the Year, is described as “poised between warm and cool, an adaptable and airy light neutral that is deeper than white, not quite gray, and ventures beyond beige or taupe.” Basically, it goes with everything.

NEED A CALM OASIS? GO BLUE.

Color experts have told us for years that blue is a soothing color, and Mapped Blue—Dutch Boy’s 2025 Color of the Year—is no exception. This timeless medium-tone blue is not too dark, not too light, and sure to look great for years to come.

1. PICK A THEME OR STYLE

To avoid looking completely random, keeping your metal items in the same style family—traditional, farmhouse, contemporary, transitional or whatever—will help keep your design cohesive. When it comes to bathrooms, our friends at Delta Faucets recommend, “Since your faucets will be the most attention-grabbing feature of your bathroom, select them first and then add items like lighting and hardware in the same style….” In other words…

2. MAKE ONE THE STAR OF THE SHOW

While it may seem the way to go is with a 50/50 metal mix, most experts say that’s a bad idea. The best bet is to use one metal about two-thirds of the time (like the soft brass in the image above) and use the other one (or two if you’re brave) for the other third.  If you go completely random with different metals and finishes everywhere, your room will just look chaotic.

3. AVOID SAME COLOR, DIFFERENT FINISH

If all your pieces are the same metal—brass, silver, whatever—but some are shiny and some are brushed, it will end up looking like you bought some, then later went back for more and got the wrong finish by mistake. You’ll want a little more contrast than that to make your design look intentional, like the brass hardware paired with the stainless faucet in this image. 4. MAKE A MOOD BOARD

Pinterest is great for this: Pin images of all the different metals and finishes you like, then move them around to see which ones play well together. Or you can go old-school with posterboard and cut-out photos. Whatever works for you!

5. FOLLOW YOUR HEART

Don’t let some salesperson/designer/influencer pressure you into getting something you don’t love. Will the fact that it’s on trend make up for the fact you don’t like it? Probably not. It’s more likely that every time you look at it, you’ll wish you’d gone with something else. It’s your home; it should be full of things you love.

UPDATE YOUR WALLS

Depending on how much wall space you have in your bathroom, this might make the biggest impact. We hear wallpaper is making a comeback, so if you want pattern that’s always an option. Apartment therapy suggests choosing a vinyl wallpaper to help resist moisture. (If you already have wallpaper and don’t want it anymore, we can remove it for you.)

Or you can keep it simple with a fresh coat of paint in a new color. REFRESH THE VANITY

While a new vanity—or one of those new/old vanities crafted from a piece of furniture—is a great upgrade, you can get a lot of bang for your buck with a couple coats of paint on your existing cabinets. PUT SOME JEWELRY ON THOSE DOORS

If your cabinets don’t have knobs or handles, you’ll be amazed at the difference adding them will make. If you do have handles, but they’re a little tired—or you’re just tired of looking at them—consider replacing them with something new and shiny. Or new and matte. Whatever suits your style.

SPLURGE ON NEW FAUCETS

Faucets are a great investment since they’re something you’ll see and use all the time There are an almost infinite number of options these days, from finishes to styles to fancy features like touch free. Check out this helpful article from HGTV for advice on how to pick the right one for you.

CONTAIN COUNTERTOP CLUTTER

Maybe all you need is to reorganize and redecorate your countertops. Give your toothbrush a pretty place to rest, invest in a few attractive containers or shop your house to see what you can repurpose, add a tray or a candle, maybe some new hand towels…

This is obviously a smaller representation of the possible outcome, but it still shows how the color will look once dried. You may be surprised that a color you liked in the can may not be your favorite anymore once it’s one the wall!
