Staining your deck not only makes it look great, but the right stain will also waterproof it, keep it from warping, and protect it from the elements. Ready to tackle the job yourself? Here is a homeowner’s guide to the dos and don’ts of staining your deck.

DO

1. Check the weather first.

Make sure you power wash and stain your deck on a day where it’s not too hot, and the upcoming forecast is clear of rain. Too much harsh sunlight or wet conditions can compromise your results.

2. Clear your deck before getting started.

Remove all furniture and decor. Sand down any rough spots or splinters. Protect any nearby plants, and sweep away any dust or debris, which would leave you without a smooth finish.

3. Start with a wash to avoid imperfections.

A pressure wash is the best tool for this, but a hose can also be used. After washing, allow two days of drying time before applying the stain.

4. Choose the right stain for the job.

A transparent stain will allow the grain of your wood to show through. However, they do require more upkeep to keep your deck looking great. Solid stains last longer and are more durable, but the thicker paint type texture will cover the wood itself.

Plan to restain your deck every 1-3 years. Power washing can be done more often. By maintaining a consistent care schedule, you’ll keep your deck in the best condition possible.

2. Go for the cheapest option.

Choose a quality stain from your local home improvement store instead of going for the lowest cost. A quality stain will consistently repel water, keep your wood in the best condition, and prevent your deck from being tarnished by the sun.

3. Forget to protect your house.

Before you begin, always prep your space! Use painters tape to avoid getting stain on your house or any other structures or fixtures that also connect to your deck.

4. Don’t skip posts, railings, cracks, stairs, etc.

Avoid patchiness in your coverage! Be sure to apply stain in any cracks, railings, stairs, etc. Small brushes will come in handy for those hard to reach spots. Be sure to use long, even strokes where possible for a uniform finish.

Don’t rush the process.

When it comes to applying stain, slow and steady produces the best results. When the job is done, allow 24-48 hours of drying time before you use the deck again.

1. Hog/animal bristle brush

All animal bristles have naturally flagged tips (think split ends), which hold oil paint in the brush’s edge and release it throughout the stroke instead of all at first contact. The black China bristle seen here is durable and is best for coating rough surfaces, like siding and decks.

2. Angular sash brush

Whenever you’re working with paneled doors, furniture, cabinets, trim, or anywhere that you’re painting close to another surface, you’ll always want to use an angular sash brush. These angular sash brushes are also called cutting brushes, and they make it incredibly easy for you to paint a clean line.  

3. Flat trim brush

Do you have a really small surface to paint? Look for a great flat trim brush! These brushes are typically 2-3 inches wide and give you a great amount of control when you’re painting. When you’ve got a small, narrow area to cover, reach for a flat trim brush.

4. Oval sash brush

Similar to flat brushes, oval brushes can be used anywhere, but they work best on flat surfaces! These brushes great for touching up small, narrow areas, and are used most often with oil-based paints.

5. Rollers

For large, flat surface areas like walls and ceilings, paint rollers will help you get the job done in about half the amount of time it would take with a paintbrush. If your surface is fairly rough, use the long naps. Short nap rollers work best on smooth surfaces. Textured rollers, which are best used on large surfaces, are designed for texture-painting that specific surface. The foam covers of these kinds of rollers have different patterns that will be reflected onto the surface that you are painting. This roller can give the effect of metal, wood, stone, etc. on different kinds of surfaces.

Always do wallpaper removal before painting

Whenever possible, you should always try to completely remove your wallpaper before painting your space. This will give you smoother, more professional-looking results that last for longer. Wallpaper under the paint can cause it to bubble and detach from the wall. Wallpaper that has been painted over is also extremely hard to remove later on. Even if there are a lot of layers of wallpaper or you’re facing a generally tough job, it will always be worth it to remove the wallpaper completely first.

Test your wallpaper

If you’ve spent any time researching beforehand, you’ll know there are a handful of different methods for removing wallpaper. To test the initial ease of your wallpaper removal, we recommend using a great utility knife to pry the paper up in an area that’s not easily noticeable. Can you pull the paper down the surface of the wall? This is great news! You most likely will not have to soak, steam or dry-strip the walls. If you have a tough time pulling the paper off by hand, you’ll want to look into soaking, steaming or dry-stripping instead. 

Know your walls

So your wallpaper isn’t budging by hand. How do you know which method to try next? First, find out if your walls are plaster or drywall. Homes that are 50+ years old typically have plaster walls, while newer homes use drywall. Drywall is much more delicate, so keep in mind that you won’t want to soak or steam-strip it and you’ll need to consider other options. 

Make sure you have the correct tools for the job

With the right tools, a wallpaper removal job can be relatively easy, even though it is time-consuming. Once you know if your wallpaper is easily peelable and if you have plaster or drywall, you can choose the best tools to get the job done right the first time. If your wallpaper can be stripped, all you’ll need is a great utility or putty knife and your hands! If you have plaster walls and decided to use a soaking method, grab a liquid stripper concentrate from your local home improvement store and a large brush or sprayer.
