Those who choose to be surprised when the baby arrives will likely still want to go with a non-gender-specific scheme, but more and more parents-to-be are going all in with girly girl and all-boy décor. Pinks and  ruffles, blues and rough-and-tumble…the trend is less generic and more playful personality.

In a word: color. As in, not beige/greige. Perfect pastels, bold brights, soothing earth tones… Newborns in 2025 will go home to color-filled spaces. Hint: since they’re not able to express a color preference, choose a hue that fills parents’ hearts with joy. There will be plenty of time for discussing room décor choices once that baby becomes a teenager.

4. OOH-LA-LA FRENCH PROVINCIAL

Elegant and understated, French provincial design is a timeless choice that marries comfort with style. For this look, mix in antique (or antique-inspired) pieces with modern ones to create a space that looks like it evolved over time. Colors to focus on are chalky whites accented with soft blues, coral, lavender, greens or grays.

5. A HINT OF A THEME

It seems this year designers are over over-the-top themed rooms, but that doesn’t mean getting rid of themes altogether. The new idea is more sprinkling themed pieces around the room rather than drenching the whole room in circus, space, cowboy or whatever. Bonus: when the chosen theme gets old, it will be easier to update the space.

START WITH A SPRING CLEAN

It’s inevitable that outdoor spaces will collect dust, leaves, the occasional cobweb, etc. Start fresh by giving your porch a good clean. Don’t forget the ceiling and any ceiling fans. Hose down anything that can handle it, then wipe down any furniture or décor, clean the glass of any light fixtures, and blow the dust off any wreath or door décor. Once it’s all clean, check for any repairs that might be needed. And then make them, of course.

ADD SOME COLOR

Plants are always a good way to brighten up a porch or entry. Depending on the style of your porch and your personal taste, splash out on some colorful pots of seasonal blooms, fluffy green ferns or elegant succulents for a modern vibe. (Hint: if you have a black thumb, artificial succulents look lifelike and need even less water than the real thing.)

Before you head to the garden center, though, look at your actual porch structure. How’s that color scheme working for you? Does anything need a fresh coat of paint? What about an unexpected color on the roof, if your porch has one, or a painted rug on the floor. You might even add some drama with a painted runner on your steps, like the one pictured. PUT OUT THE WELCOME MAT

Literally! Or the welcome rug, if you prefer. If your old mat has seen better days, maybe it’s time to retire it to the back door or garage entrance and welcome guests with a fresh new look. Size matters—if your door has sidelights, designers say your doormat should go all the way across. If you can’t find a mat that size that suits your style, try the trendy layered look—a mat on top of a rug. Make sure you don’t inadvertently cause a tripping hazard, though. That’s not the way anyone wants to make an entrance into your home.

ARRANGE THE FURNITURE

You’re certainly welcome to set a row of rocking chairs side-by-side, Cracker Barrel-style, but consider the advantages of placing your seating in conversational groupings instead. A variety of cushions is a great, budget-friendly way to change up your look for the season or special occasions. Don’t forget to make a place to set your beverage of choice, or even a full-on dining spot if you have the space. Is a table, bookshelf, stool, or other piece of furniture languishing away in a dark corner of your home? Consider upcycling it with a coat of paint and using it as a plant stand or beverage station.

ADD ACCESSORIES

This is where your personal style can really shine through. Welcome signs, door wreaths, flags, even the containers you choose for plants all offer hints to the personality of your home and the people who live there. If you’re stuck on where to start, think about the style of your entrance. Does it ooze Southern charm? Down-home pieces that don’t scream “NEW” will look just right. Is your home more formal? There are many elegant options, from topiaries to lanterns to statues. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something that makes you happy—and if it’s seasonal, remember to swap it out when the season changes.

Once your porch is prepped and ready, take some time to admire your handiwork.  Pour yourself a drink, pull up a chair and relax. After all, that’s what Southern front porches are all about.

BENJAMIN MOORE: OCTOBER MIST

Described as “evoking the silver-green stem of a flower,” October Mist is a “gently shaded sage” that provides a backdrop for “encouraging individual expression through color.” (And you thought it was just a pretty pale green, didn’t you?)

BH&G’s slightly darker hue is also inspired by the plant world. They describe their dusty green as mimicking “the rejuvenating appeal of eucalyptus leaves” and tell us it “reflects a renewed desire to incorporate elements of nature into our homes.”

SHERWIN WILLIAMS: EVERGREEN FOG

If the first two don’t do it for you, how about this misty green? Described as “soothing, subtle, and a perfect shade to freshen up any space,” Evergreen Fog adds a hint of gray into the mix for a color that gives a nod to history but fits beautifully in a modern home.

PPG: OLIVE SPRIG

If you think you don’t like green, Olive Sprig may be the perfect choice for you. PPG describes it as “a midtone, neutral, lush green with an organic green undertone.” They suggest pairing it with soft rose tones. How pretty would that be?

GLIDDEN: GUACAMOLE

This is not your mama’s guacamole green. Glidden tells us, “This spirited yet soothing green brings an organic energy to any space, which is needed because we all know you’ve probably killed at least three plants this year.” True that.

BEHR: BREEZEWAY

Behr headed to the beach for a different nature-inspired hue, expressing peace and tranquility with this “relaxed and uplifting” shade of sea glass green. It reminds us of classic southern homes and, we’re told, “naturally harmonizes with shades of white, gray and natural wood tones for effortless style in any room.” Even in your breezeway.

Gray: Invokes feelings of comfort and warmth. It’s a versatile color that is both timeless and classic.

White: Invokes feelings of calm and serenity while also creating an allusion of having more space.
→ Try in any room, especially one you might want to feel more open and spacious.

Now that you have an idea of how certain colors might affect your mood, it’s time to decide how you want to feel in the room that you want to paint. Are you looking to paint your living room? Maybe consider painting it red to pump up the energy, or green for a more relaxing living room, or blue for a calming living room, but remember, there are colors to avoid in your living room as well, such as orange which is too energetic to promote relaxation. Once you do find a color you like, limit your colors in a room to a select few; too many colors can make a room feel chaotic or cluttered.

That’s why today we’re letting you in on a few professional trade secrets that most painting companies won’t tell you. So the next time you have a beckoning painting project that you want to get started on, grab your paint, your brushes, and this article. We’re letting you in on four big secrets that every truly professional painting company knows that will help you achieve professional results every time.

SECRET #1: Put adequate time into your prep.

Paint preparation often takes more time than the painting itself, but it’s always worth the work. Before you start, be sure to take ALL furniture out of the room. Use drop cloths to cover all surfaces. Wash, patch and sand your walls, trim or doors as needed. Use painting tape to protect windows and baseboards, and use plastic bags to cover doorknobs. Always remove any light switches and fixtures as well before you start. Paint can actually accentuate imperfections, so it’s best to take care of them upfront. The more work you do on the front end, the better your finished paint job will be.

SECRET #2: Make caulk your new best friend.

Here’s a tip that most DIY painters tend to miss. When you want professional results from your project, using caulk will make a big difference in your result. Filling gaps around your trim, doors, windows, and crown molding with caulk will give your paint finish a professional look and also make your trim look better than new. Always start with a thin application inside the cracks where wood meets your walls, and be sure to remove any extra caulk to keep things looking clean. You may want to consider purchasing a dripless caulk gun to achieve the most professional-looking results.

SECRET #3: It’s all in the tools you use.

Do you want to know the biggest insider secret to professional painting results in your home? It’s all about the tools you use! A great paintbrush is essential for a professional-looking finish, so be sure not to skimp on price here. Try to stick with poly brushes for exterior painting and soft nylon for the interior. Paintbrushes are available in 1 to 4-inch widths, and it’s always a good idea to keep a few different sizes on hand, depending on the areas you want to paint.

In the same vein, be sure to stay away from cheap roller covers. When your roller doesn’t hold enough paint, you end up with layers of paint with varying thickness and lap marks along your walls. When you’re shopping for a roller, try a ½ inch nap roller cover (preferably wool blend). If you take care of it and clean it properly, it will last you for many paint jobs to come. And while we’re at it, use top quality paint! The better quality your paint is, the fewer coats you’ll have to use, and the faster you will be done with professional results. Good paint doesn’t come cheap, however. Expect to spend at least $20 -$30 per gallon for a top of the line product.

Secret 4: Paint in the right order.

Did you know most professional work in a certain order when painting a room? Of all the painting secrets, this one alone will save you a ton of time and clean up on your paint job. Whenever you can, always paint the trim first, then the ceilings and walls. It’s easier to protect and tape off trim and baseboards instead of the walls. When you work this way, you don’t have to be super neat while painting your trim. After it is totally dry, simply protect it with an easy release painters tape. From there, you can paint the ceiling if needed, before moving on to your walls.
