Just because we turned the page on a new calendar year doesn’t mean you need to throw out everything and start over with your interior design. At the same time, it can’t hurt to get a peek at what the design buzz is about for 2026, can it? Predictions are all over the place, but here are five that keep showing up.

1. DRAMA!

Image: MyDecorInspo

Simple, clean lines and minimalism are so 2025. This year is all about drama and has Pinterest boards bulging with what MSN calls “Opera Aesthetic.” Think velvet drapes (on windows and beds), tufted furniture, deep jewel tones, and crystal chandeliers. The trend isn’t just for interiors, either, with one architect noting that ornamentation is making its way outside onto buildings. Inside or out, if you want to make your home diva-worthy, all we can say is “Bravo!”

2. NATURAL WOOD

Image: Amazon

The trend toward natural materials is nothing new, but over at Real Simple one designer is calling for “natural finish” (aka unpolished and presumably not stained) wood and other materials that will “develop character over time.” Is that really a design trend or just an excuse for stains, nicks, and scuffs? You decide.

3. RICH COLORS

Image: Tumbler

Never mind Pantone and their “lofty white” color of the year. Word on the design street is we can expect to see more saturated colors adorning walls in 2026—possibly in high gloss and lacquered finishes. If that feels a little bit much, you can dip your toe into this trend with richly colored accessories, like throws, pillows, etc.

4. PERSONALITY

Image: Aulivin

Whether it’s the latest “core” trend—grandma-core seems to be the one in favor at the moment—or the addition of more prints and textures to generic gray rooms, impersonal is out and personality is back. And why not? Shouldn’t a home’s decor reflect the people who live in it? You do you!

5. CURVES

Image: Foter

There’s no doubt that sharp angles and clean lines are striking. However, their appeal may fade when what those edges are striking is your shin, hip or other body part that dared to get in their way. Maybe that’s why curves—especially in accent furniture—are keep popping up in 2026 designs. Rounded chairs, ottomans, and the like soften all those angles and look good doing it. Probably still best to avoid running into them, but if you do, at least it will be less painful.

Will these be the trends that take over magazines and TV design projects? We’ll just have to wait and see. One thing you can count on is that when you have a painting project, we’ll be ready to help make your home look fabulous, whatever you choose.

The year is barely half over, but already trendwatchers have polished their crystal balls and are peering into the future to predict what interior design will look like in 2026. Whether their guesses are accurate or way off base, it’s fun to see what people in the design biz think we’ll see next year. Here are the most common predictions we’ve seen so far…

SMART TECHNOLOGY

Image: Pixabay

Our homes are becoming smarter every year and 2026 should be no different. Smart thermostats, lighting, and appliances are becoming the standard—you probably already have one or more of these already. What that looks like on the design front is furniture with integrated charging stations and a designated place for your devices baked into a room’s design. Because while it’s great that you can ask your voice-controlled device where the heck your phone or tablet is, it’s even better when you don’t have to.

SUSTAINABILITY

Image: BambooFurnitureTalk.com

Sustainability has many faces, but some of the most popular sustainable design options are:

Using renewable resources like bamboo and cork for floors and furnishings

Recycled materials, such as metal, reclaimed wood, and the like

Upcycled furnishings—because keeping things out of landfills is helpful

Sustainable Sourcing: making sure materials are sourced from responsible suppliers to minimize environmental impact.

MINIMALISM

Image: DecorKingdoms.com

Sometimes less is more—but minimalism doesn’t have to mean cold and empty. The new wave of minimalist design welcomes color, texture, and personal touches to make your space look sensationally spare. Key to this design style is keeping it simple with pieces that are both stylish and practical.

MAXIMALISM

Image: Steph Wilson

On the other hand, sometimes more is more. If deep, rich colors and a vibe that murmurs luxury is what you crave, maximalism is just what the design doctor ordered. Remember our recent post on color drenching? This is the perfect style to use it. The key to this look is to keep all those patterns, colors, and mixed styles of furnishings and décor balanced and organized. Otherwise, your ‘more’ might turn into ‘too much.’

PERSONALIZATION

Image: Noland Live, Pexels

One of our favorite trends for 2026 is the freedom to make your home distinctly “yours.” Personalize your space with things you have a history with—your collections of whatever, something you picked up on a trip or inherited from a loved one or got an amazing deal on at a yard sale. Consider a wall color that reminds you of a favorite memory. Your home is your sanctuary. Fill it with things that make you smile and/or bring you peace.

Will these really be the 2026 design trends? What do you think?

For many of us, working from home is here to stay. If you’re happy cranking out stuff from your kitchen island or balancing your laptop on your knees in a recliner, we’re not going to tell you that you have to change. But before you settle for status quo, you might want to check out the latest trends in home office design. We checked with a number of designers and here’s what they say the 2024 home office has to offer:

NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON’T

Image: No Vacancy

Whether or not you have the luxury of a dedicated home office, you don’t necessarily want to look at your workstation 24/7, do you? Leave the office behind—behind doors, tucked away in a murphy desk situation, or cleverly hidden in one of many other furniture options available these days. Out of sight may not be completely out of mind, but will make it easier to focus on other important things like your family, pets, hobbies, etc.

LET THERE BE (NATURAL) LIGHT

Image: The Kitchen Master

Even if you work all hours, it’s good to know when the sun rises or sets. It helps with circadian rhythm, the internal body clock that helps us function. Ideally, your workspace will have natural light through a window, door or skylight. If not, you may have to try a little harder to check in with the sun. On nice days, can you move your workspace to a patio, screened porch, or picnic table in a park? If that’s not possible, schedule regular breaks to get up, go outside and breathe fresh air. Your body will thank you!

INSPIRATION STATION

Image: Etsy

Make your workspace a place you enjoying being in. It’s not frivolous, it’s practical. Why? If something about your home office rubs you the wrong way, that little irritation will always be there—and it’s not likely to turn into a pearl. A gloomy space can be depressing, making it harder to focus on and enjoy your job. The solution: Add soothing or uplifting colors to walls, art and/or furniture. Include things that inspire you: photos of your family, inspirational quotes, pictures of your next vacation and anything else that reminds you why you do what you do.

BE-LEAF IN YOURSELF

Did you know? Having plants in the office lowers anxiety, anger and tiredness. (See the stats.) More calm, happiness and energy makes any day go better, don’t you think? Of course, “real” plants are best, what with the improved air quality and all, but this year’s trend of bringing the outside in can work for anyone. Even those who can’t keep a plastic plant alive. For example, you can add natural elements through earthy neutral paint colors or wallpaper inspired by the great outdoors. For help transforming your walls, contact us.

Is it time to stop thinking of your home office as a stopgap solution? Don’t be afraid to invest some time, thought and (maybe) money into creating a workspace that will make ‘going to work’ better for you, even if your commute only takes you across the hall.

Mixed metals in your interior design can add a designer touch…or it can look like a hot mess. Keep reading for tips on how to mix metals in a way that feels intentional and looks fabulous.

1. PICK A THEME OR STYLE

Image: Delta

To avoid looking completely random, keeping your metal items in the same style family—traditional, farmhouse, contemporary, transitional or whatever—will help keep your design cohesive. When it comes to bathrooms, our friends at Delta Faucets recommend, “Since your faucets will be the most attention-grabbing feature of your bathroom, select them first and then add items like lighting and hardware in the same style….” In other words…

2. MAKE ONE THE STAR OF THE SHOW

Image: Sara Tramp for Emily Henderson

While it may seem the way to go is with a 50/50 metal mix, most experts say that’s a bad idea. The best bet is to use one metal about two-thirds of the time (like the soft brass in the image above) and use the other one (or two if you’re brave) for the other third. If you go completely random with different metals and finishes everywhere, your room will just look chaotic.

3. AVOID SAME COLOR, DIFFERENT FINISH

Image: Delta

If all your pieces are the same metal—brass, silver, whatever—but some are shiny and some are brushed, it will end up looking like you bought some, then later went back for more and got the wrong finish by mistake. You’ll want a little more contrast than that to make your design look intentional, like the brass hardware paired with the stainless faucet in this image. For a handy intro to metal types and finishes, check out this post from Vibrant Living by Blakely.

4. MAKE A MOOD BOARD

Image: EssentialHome.eu

Pinterest is great for this: Pin images of all the different metals and finishes you like, then move them around to see which ones play well together. Or you can go old-school with posterboard and cut-out photos. Whatever works for you!

5. FOLLOW YOUR HEART

Image: Kitchen Design Concepts

Don’t let some salesperson/designer/influencer pressure you into getting something you don’t love. Will the fact that it’s on trend make up for the fact you don’t like it? Probably not. It’s more likely that every time you look at it, you’ll wish you’d gone with something else. It’s your home; it should be full of things you love.

What’s hot in the decorating scene this fall? If you’ve been around long enough you’ll spot some familiar trends done in a new way (hello, seventies!) and some timeless classics (see numbers 4 and 5). Maybe one of them is just what you didn’t know your home needed—until now.

1. EARTHY COLORS WITH A 70’S VIBE

Image: PureWow

Some say this trend came out of COVD when many of us craved a relaxed environment. Or maybe it’s simply due to people with fond memories of the seventies feeling nostalgic. Whatever the reason, seventies’ colors and furniture styles are back with an updated twist, like the wallpaper pictured (from Lulu and Georgia). If you’re really into retro, vintage pieces from the seventies can add a little instant history to a modern space and make it feel homier.

2. CURVED SILHOUETTES

Image: The Nordroom

While we’ve all admired the look of furniture with razor-sharp lines shown in design magazines, have you ever tried to get comfortable on it? This fall, leave the sharp edges behind and cozy up to curves that hug your body in a welcoming way while softening any space.

3. WOOD IN NATURAL/DARK FINISHES

Image: Walmart.com

Move over, white lacquer and blonde wood. Natural and dark brown finishes are back, bringing a touch of the outside to our interior spaces. Darker hues add warmth, which is perfect for fall but will still feel good the rest of the year.

4. CHECKERBOARD PATTERNS

Image: HGTV.com

When we say a checkerboard pattern is timeless, we mean it: everyone from the ancient Greeks and Romans to the Victorians to…well, everyone…has used it in one form or another. We say if it was good enough for Julius Caesar and Queen Victoria, it’s good enough for us!

5. JEWEL TONES

Image: Wayfair

Here’s another trend that’s here to stay. HGTV.com advises us to “Go all in on the trend….” because “Dramatic emerald, sapphire, ruby and citrine applied with luxury velvet or jacquard textiles will always create a statement in fall and winter design.”
